Reliquary of the Wooden Pagoda of Hwangnyongsa Temple

The Gyeongju National Museum is holding a special exhibition titled "Reliquary of the Hwangnyongsa Wooden Pagoda" to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the excavation of the Hwangnyongsa Temple Site. The foundation stone, which once housed the reliquary, remains to this day at the site where the Hwangnyongsa Wooden Pagoda once stood. This exhibition brings together and showcases approximately 350 reliquary items, including the reliquary discovered in the reliquary chamber of the foundation stone and artifacts identified through the 1976 excavation beneath the stone. In particular, the gilt-bronze reliquary box and the lid of the reliquary chamber, excavated from within the chamber, are being unveiled after undergoing extensive conservation treatment and restoration. Additionally, new insights into the reliquary revealed through scientific investigation and research are being presented. We hope this will be an opportunity to encounter the world of the reliquary enshrined in the Hwangnyongsa Wooden Pagoda, a symbol of Silla Buddhism, in a new light.
