Read the full introduction

Lacquerware is a craft material and technique that has been used by humanity for a long time, dating back approximately 3,000 years. In our country, the oldest traces of lacquerware were found on a bronze dagger of the bronze age, specifically on the (Yeosu) Jeollyang-dong site. Then, where did lacquerware originate? What process was involved in making the crafts beautifully decorated? Since 2020, the Seoul Craft Museum has been conducting research and studies by directly visiting lacquerware production sites across the country in order to find the answer to this question. Based on those results, we developed a mobile exhibition box called "Lacquer Craft Box," which allows you to see the history of the materials and techniques of Korean lacquer craft at a glance. This introduces the process of how lacquer extracted from lacquer trees is used to create lacquerware (漆器), explaining each step in detail. ※ This exhibition can be viewed during the operating hours of the Craft Archive Room (Tuesday to Friday, 10:00 to 17:30). "Please note that the Craft Archive Room is an open storage space. Before entering, you must register your information at the kiosk located in front of the entrance to the exhibition hall."
